Why Smoking Electronic Cigarettes Are Bad for Your Teeth and Gums
“The true face of smoking is disease, death and horror – not the glamour and sophistication the pushers in the tobacco industry try to portray.” – David Byrne
Are you a smoker? If so, have you considered smoking electronic (e-cigarettes) instead of traditional cigarettes? Otherwise, you might never have smoked in your life before, and are considering taking up smoking because of the advertised benefits of an e-cigarette. It does not matter what your reasons for wanting to try an e-cigarette, it is worthwhile reading this content and then making a decision as to whether it is a good idea to smoke e-cigarettes or not.
Let’s face it! When e-cigarettes arrived on the scene, they were seen as having health advantages over conventional cigarettes. Researchers who conducted studies on the types of advertisements that encouraged smokers to switch from tobacco cigarettes to e-cigarettes found that the most effective advertisements were the adverts that compared the two different products and expounded on all of the benefits of smoking electronic cigarettes. In a nutshell, the most successful adverts describe e-cigarettes as being healthier, cheaper, and easier to smoke, etc.
Unfortunately, current research has shown, and continues to show that smoking both tobacco cigarettes as well as e-cigarettes are a major cause of periodontal disease.
What is an e-cigarette?
Therefore, before we look at some of the reasons why smoking e-cigarettes is just as bad for your oral health as smoking normal cigarettes, let’s have a look at what an e-cigarette is:
In essence, “electronic cigarettes, also called e-cigarettes or electronic nicotine delivery systems, are battery-powered devices that heat cartridges, which typically contain nicotine and humectants, to create a vapour that the user inhales.”
As I understand an e-cigarette, it is an electronic device that converts liquid nicotine into a vapour that the smoker then inhales. Ergo, you get your allotted dose of nicotine without having to inhale the tar and the other nasty components that you would inhale by smoking tobacco.
Reasons why e-cigarettes are bad for your dental health
A stated above, new research is finding that “electronic cigarettes are as equally damaging to gums and teeth as conventional cigarettes.” Part of the reason why e-cigarettes were originally advertised as being safer than tobacco cigarettes is because scientists thought that the chemicals found in traditional cigarette smoke were the main triggers of ill-health; however, the latest studies show that smoking e-cigarettes has similar negative effects on the human body.
The primary reason why electronic cigarettes are harmful to your health is that when you inhale the burnt vapours, the cells in your mouth become inflamed; ergo, it stresses your mouth cells out, which in turn causes periodontal disease. In my opinion, the question that begs is how long it will take for the onset of gum disease. The short answer is that it depends on how much you smoke per day.
Scientists have also noted that the different vapour flavours have differing negative impacts on your mouth and lungs. Ergo, some flavours are more harmful to you, while others are less harmful to you.
Modern science has acknowledged that there is still a lot of research to be conducted around the topic of how harmful e-cigarettes are for your health. However, I believe that in the meantime we can safely conclude that smoking any type of cigarette is harmful to your oral health.
