Infographic: the Science Behind CBD Oil
Medical cannabis is a hot topic in elections nationwide. In face, some people say that cannabis was the real winner in the 2016 fall elections. It was legalized half a dozen places to various degrees. People are starting to recognize that not only is cannabis not dangerous to the public, but also there are some viable medical uses for it. Up until recently cannabidiol was not widely used, available, or talked about, but thanks to the legalized cannabis boom it has become a frontline medical treatment for many serious ailments.
The science behind CBD oil has not been exhaustively studied as of yet, but the studies that have been done have found that CBD oil has had a great deal of efficacy in treating many different ailments. This is likely due to the fact the compounds in CBD oil work directly with the human body’s endocannabinoid system, which regulates many of the functions of the human body. Cannabidiol is one of the more than 80 cannabinoid compounds found in cannabis plants which interact with the human endocannabinoid system.
CBD interacts with the 5-HT1A serotonin receptor to regulate anxiety, eating disorders, addiction, sleep disorders, nausea, and vomiting. It binds to TRPV1 receptors to moderate inflammation, body temperature, and pain. It blocks G protein receptor GPR55 that can decrease cancer and osteoporosis. It activated PPARs to decrease the spread of cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.
Anecdotal evidence also shows efficacy in treating severe seizure disorders, multiple sclerosis, prion disease, diabetes, fibromyalgia, insomnia, and schizophrenia, among many other things. Because of the way CBD interacts with the body’s regulatory systems, it is likely that any disease caused or exacerbated by inefficiency in these regulatory systems could in theory be treated with CBD oil.
Unfortunately CBD oil is in legal limbo in many places. The 2014 made industrial hemp farming legal across the board and made it legal to sell the products made from hemp, but even though CBD oil can be made from hemp it is still considered illegal at the federal level thanks to an update in 2016 to the federal register making any cannabinoids derived from any cannabis plant a controlled substance.
This makes the business of manufacturing and selling these products risky, which can in turn keep them from the patients who need them the most. Currently there are several states that allow for the use of marijuana for medical reasons, but if you don’t live in one of these states your only recourse to get treatment is to move. You also can’t go buy your medication in another state and transport it to where you live – interstate commerce of these products is prohibited at the Federal level.
CBD has proven itself to be a lifesaving medication for many people, including many children with severe life-threatening seizure disorders for whom traditional pharmaceutical treatments don’t work.
