Before expanding on the surgical costs for this surgery it is important to look at a brief background to what this condition actually is.

Gynecomastia

What is Gynecomastia?

It is the enlargement of tissue in male breasts. It is actually quite common and normally affects teenage boys and older men.  Two out of three teenage boys develop some degree of gynecomastia and in 90% of these boys the condition just gets better by itself.

Although it is very common it is not openly discussed as some people find it embarrassing.

Symptoms

These can be variable. It can be a small firm enlargement of breast tissue just behind the nipple or even development of a large more feminine looking breast. The area can be tender to touch or painful. Sometimes this can be a mixture of fatty tissue as well.

Causes

Puberty: –

During puberty there is a rise in levels of hormones both oestrogen and testosterone. The oestrogen stimulates the breasts to grow and the testosterone prevents them from growing. In early puberty the oestrogen levels may be higher but normally by about the age of fifteen testosterone levels settle higher and the breast tissue declines.

Ageing: –

As you get older these is often a gain in the fat a person carries. This results in higher oestrogen levels. This can cause breasts to increase in size .There is also normally an extra amount of fatty tissue.

There may also be other causes linked to breast growth and if you are concerned you should see your doctor to see if these symptoms are as a result of another condition.

Treatments

Normally gynecomastia can be treated with life style changes and if necessary drugs. However if it does not improve, and the condition has been with a person a long time and affecting their quality of life then surgery may be required.

Surgery

They type of operation will depend on the size of the breasts and the amount of excess skin there is.  It may sometimes involve more than one operation. Breast reduction can be carried out (a mammoplasty) with or without liposuction. Unfortunately some breast tissue may be left behind so the condition could return.

According to statistics obtained from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons gynecomastia surgery cost is about $3525 ( 2016 ).As mentioned the costs can vary depending on the actual procedure needed. Research has shown that costs can become considerably higher if extensive plastic surgery is required. This can be as high as $ 6500.

This would include the cost of;

  • Anesthetic
  • Hospital Costs
  • Medical laboratory costs
  • Post surgery clothing i.e. a compression vest.
  • Prescription costs
  • Surgeons Fees

In most cases costs for correction of gynecomastia is not covered by insurance coverage. It is termed an elective procedure.

Why is surgery so expensive?

This type of surgery needs to be carried out by specialists. There is also special equipment required. Surgery must be done under general anesthesia in a hospital. Post operative special vests must be worn which will add to the costs.

The final decision whether to go for surgery would be a personal one after consulting your specialist. It is expensive but may help men to feel less stressed and embarrassed about this common condition.
