Braces are dental devices used to straighten the teeth. They are used for people who don’t have perfect set of teeth. It is not an immediate corrective process; the teeth take to correction with time. To get braces fixed on your teeth, you have to see a dentist.
Braces are of different types, but with the help of a dentist, you will get the correct type of braces matching the dental structure of your teeth. The special dentist responsible for operations like this is called an Orthodontic Dentist or Orthodontist.

Traditional Braces

One of the types of braces is the traditional brace. As the name implies, it is one of the oldest types of braces. Back in the olden days when they were still in use, these braces were heavy in the mouth as they are made from stainless steel. With time, these braces were made in lighter weight and structure than they were in time past. They have metal brackets which are fastened together with a type of cement using arch wire.

The brackets put pressure on the teeth so they can move to the correct place with time. These arch wires use tiny elastic materials called Ligatures. These ligatures are changed when the braces are made tighter by the Orthodontist. Some of these braces are self-ligating, that is they don’t use ligatures.

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces work the same way as the traditional braces, but unlike the traditional braces that are made from stainless steel which are visible, the ceramic braces are made from see-through, translucent ceramic materials. These braces are less visible and are most common among adults that are in need of orthodontic treatment. Sometimes, the people who wear them tend to find out some parts of the braces changing color and causing marks on the teeth. You can use an anti-cavity fluoride mouth rinse to help protect against cavities.

Damon Braces

These braces are the most popular ones at this time. This is because they are the most gentle on the teeth and require few visits to the orthodontist for maintenance. These braces are self-ligating and unlike the traditional and ceramic braces that use elastics, Damon braces use a slide mechanism to join the arch wires. These braces give faster outcomes because they move on their own and need little or no adjustments. They also don’t cause much friction and pressure on the teeth. By not visiting the dentist often, it helps to save money.

Advantages of using Dental Braces

  1. If you have dental flaws like protruding jaws, buck teeth or crooked teeth, braces will help to correct and straighten them.
  2. Braces will also help the gum to stand firm so it will be able to hold the teeth in their correct position.

Disadvantages of Dental Braces

  1. Braces tend to cause pain and discomfort for the patients who wear them especially during the process of installing the braces on the teeth.
  2. For people who get embarrassed by things like this, braces could cause some embarrassments for such people.

Managing your Braces

For people who use braces or are planning to get one, you have to give special care and attention to your braces. Some food particles could get stuck in between your braces, so it’s best to get a special brush that can reach the corners of the braces.
You can also use painkillers to subside the pain you experience when you initially install the braces.

Visiting your orthodontist is the most secure step to take when you have any problems that home remedies can’t solve.
