Before starting your maintenance procedure, be sure to shut down the power of your unit as it is dangerous to work around the air conditioner’s moving part. Also, shut down the power of the circuit breaker if necessary.

  1. Check out the circuit breaker

Breakdowns of electricity can hamper your maintenance. Check out the circuit breaker regularly, otherwise frequent breakdowns will directly affect the performance of your air conditioner. Make sure that your circuit breaker is working properly and nothing is wrong with the supply that the AC is receiving.

  1. Install a Programmable Thermostat

A programmable thermostat is a thermostat that adjusts the temperature according to a programmed setting for different times of the day. It helps to make your home more energy-efficient. The main purpose of AC in your home is to control the temperature of the interior spaces. The thermostat controls the heat exchange. A proper maintenance of the thermostat will increase its longevity. Installing a thermostat will enable you to set different temperatures at varying times to save the energy and provide efficient cooling.

  1. Clean Air filter

Disposable air filter should be changed every couple of months. Or you can install a portable and washable air filter that you need to clean regularly and set in the unit. Normally, if you have large family or pets, your air filter might clog with more dust, debris, and dirt. If possible, try to check your air filter before it gets clogged.

  1. Clean the fins

To clean up the fins, spray water from the inside out to wash out the dirt. You can use fin cleaners too, if the fins are very dirty. Try to avoid pressure washer as it damages the fins drastically.

When your Ac is out of service, cover it with plywood or plastic to prevent dirt and debris. But don’t cover it full as it can cause corrosion and birds might build nests inside it.

  1. Clean the Evaporator Coil

Evaporator coils can be found in the blower unit. Take out the duct tapes and screws to unveil it. You need to clean up the dirt of the coil carefully with a soft brush, spray some coil cleaner on it. The spray will make foam on coil and after that, it will fall down to the drain pan.

You need to clean up the drain pan with washing materials like soap, warm water, and later on with a little amount of bleach. The next job is to pour a mixture of 50% water and 50% bleach down the drain. It will keep the drain free from any clogging for a longer period of time. In addition, a drain pan tablet can protect the drain from the growth of algae.

  1. Clean a Clogged Evaporator Drain

The drain is generally located close to the external unit which can be cleaned and can be made clog-free by applying high pressure water.  You need to open the fitting and attach the hose to the water hose from the garden and apply high pressure water. But at the same time, this should be done with care as excessive pressure may create some leakage in the drain pipe too.

  1. Change the Blower Filter

If you live in a dusty area, you might need to change the blower filter often. But normally, you need to change the filter a couple of times in a year, before starting summer and before starting winter. Ensure the same air-flow rated filter before replace the old one. Open the door with a screwdriver and the change the old filter with a new one. Later on, mark the airflow direction for future maintenance.

  1. Leave Doors Open

To enhance proper air-flow, sometimes you must leave the interior door open. When we install the AC, close all the windows and vents. That can create humidity and make you feel suffocated. Your AC needs to work harder to give you desired temperature when the door is closed. That can affect your AC within short time.
