Winter and Acne: How to Get Rid of It


To cope with pimples in winter is the scariest thought. We not only cut social engagements because of these little bad guys but we also end up layering our skin with not-so-effective skin care products. And what is worse? Rubbing pimples unnecessarily, scuffing them and picking at them are few reasons why we infuriate the growth of these zits even more.

Most people blame dirt as a culprit for producing acne, whilst other claims that hormonal change is in charge of acne as we hit a certain age – thanks to puberty. But that’s not always the case – we can irritate skin by over-washing our face, as well as we can control hormonal changes by taking proper care of our diet and health routine.

Since the weather is all cold and breezy, people with acne have more chances of experiencing breakouts all of over their face. In this article, we will be talking about easy and natural ways through which you can get rid of acne without having to worry about spending thousands of bucks on expensive skin care products.


Keep Yourself Hydrated

We know you have probably heard this a million times but having enough water daily fights off so many bacteria and unwelcoming diseases out of your body. On average, a person should drink up to eight glasses of water every day in order to stay hydrated. Water does not get rid of acne by itself overnight, but it is one of the major sources through which you can speed up the rejuvenation process of your skin.

Moisturize Your Skin

Staying hydrated also means hydrating your skin with the best moisturizer especially in winters when there are more chances of you to have a dry and cracked skin. Buy a moisturizer that suits your skin – oily skin is more prone to acne, but if you have dry skin then your body has more reasons to create sebum, which results in pimples.

Exercise Daily

You all may have heard this several times that exercise of any kind – be it yoga, cardio, or Pilates reduces your stress level and keeps you happy along with providing a better body shape. Exercising regularly also helps in keeping the acne at bay. While you exercise, your stress level drops and therefore it reduces oil production on your skin. Sweat on the other hand helps your body to wash down dead skin cells.

Eat Right

Eating right means to fill your tummy with the right nutrition and say goodbye to unhealthy food. Not eating right and having too much oily food results in developing acne. Try avoiding extra processed foods and replace them with whole grains, green vegetables, and lean protein. Taking all the nutrition and balancing the needs of your body will definitely keep your skin healthy.

Sleep like a Baby

Sleeping at least 8 hours straight is also essential. Sleeping less not only bloats our tummies and brings headaches, but it also limits the ability of our skin to produce new cells. Having enough sleep means your body is detoxifying as well as relaxing it at the same time.

Say Goodbye to Stress

It is deplorable how much harm can stress do to our overall health. Almost every problem that we face physically is because of sustaining too much stress on our shoulders. Stress awakens Sebum production, which is an oily substance responsible for mixing up with our dead skin cells and arousing bacteria to thwart our hair follicles – this process results in the formation of acne cyst and pimples.

Try to keep stress away by adding simple, creative things to your routine. Start reading a book, adopt a pet, meditate, watch your favorite show, practice yoga, or take a hot bath to clear your mind from clogging up with unnerving thoughts.

Keep Clean

Dirt is not entirely responsible for acne but it can trigger pimples to spread out quickly. If you have oily skin, try to shower daily to wash off any unhealthy oil, bacteria, or dead skin cells from your body. Use a gentle cleanser and wash your body with it. If you are a person who loves to exercise, adding a shower right after coming back from the gym to your routine is healthy for your skin, because sweat triggers bacteria and you need to get rid of the dead skin cells that you sloughed during work out.

Cleaning also includes washing your every single piece of cloth that comes in contact with your skin and might has the probability of having oil and bacteria on it.

Apart from including all of the aforementioned tips into your routine, be protective about your skin. Use oil-free makeup and apply sun screen whenever you go out. And most importantly, stop touching your face, picking at your zits, and scratching your pimples – you will only upset your skin more.
