A perfect smile is what everyone dreams of. It enhances one’s self-confidence and gives a youthful appearance. On the other hand, an unattractive smile can mess up one’s social life and it can even lead to depression.

Actually, there are many people who are not interested to socialize for the fear of dejection. The reason behind this disinterest and fear is their unappealing smile. So, what actually gives one a perfect smile?

Let’s check out what the experts are saying. According to the dental practitioners at the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), there are five habits that can gift you a million dollar smile.

Flossing is indispensable for a pretty smile

Flossing is just as important as brushing your teeth twice a day is to achieve and maintain a healthy smile. Food particles leave cavity-causing bacteria and proper flossing removes them.

Flossing for the first time may cause irritation and bleeding. But you don’t need to panic. It is natural and you should continue flossing at least once a day for strong gums and good oral health.

Use a soft-bristled toothbrush for your pearly whites

Gums are sensitive and brushing with a hard-bristled toothbrush can damage your gums. If you continue to do so, the damage can be irreversible.

In fact, using a hard-bristled toothbrush and following wrong brushing techniques are the common reasons behind bleeding gums. Using a soft-bristled toothbrush is healthy for your gums and teeth.

Throw your old toothbrush and get a new one

Your teeth require a new toothbrush every three to four months. Old toothbrushes are ineffective. They can invite harmful bacteria which, in turn can lead to infections. Dentists suggest changing toothbrush after you recover from cough and cold.

Don’t hurry to brush your teeth after having acidic foods and beverages

High consumption of acidic foods and beverages like citrus fruits and energy drinks damage tooth enamel. If you brush your teeth immediately after having these items will worsen the condition furthermore.

You are actually brushing the acid into the teeth, not removing it. That is why, you should brush your teeth at least half-an-hour after having acidic foods and beverages.

Avoid bleaching your teeth excessively

Excessive bleaching of your teeth can cause serious problems. It can aggravate tooth sensitivity. If you want to use an at-home bleaching product, it is wiser to consult your dentist before doing so.

He or she will be able to advise you regarding the type of bleaching product you should use for obtaining the best results and also how to use the product properly.

Follow the right brushing and flossing techniques

Well, following the previous four steps is not enough to have an attractive smile. These are of absolutely no use if you are unaware of the proper way of brushing and flossing. There are certain brushing and flossing techniques. Learn about them in the following:

Brushing

Always brush your teeth in a circular motion and placing the brush at a 45 degree angle against the gums. Move the brush in gentle strokes back and forth and clean the inner, outer and chewing surfaces of your teeth.

While brushing the inner surfaces of the front teeth, you should use the tip of the brush. Don’t forget to clean your tongue. It removes bacteria and freshens your breath.

Flossing

Use your thumbs and forefingers in order to hold the floss tightly. Move the floss gently between your teeth and gum in up-and-down motions.
