Going Sober: Tips for a Safer Alcohol Detoxification

If you have an addiction to alcohol, then it is imperative to seek treatment. This is especially the case when addiction is affecting your everyday life and the people you associate with regularly. Addiction to alcohol is serious and getting treatment can sometimes mean the difference between life and death, or at the very least getting employment. Before you start any kind of therapy however, you need to undergo a detoxification process. To have a safe detox, experts recommend working with medical professionals who can monitor and wean you off alcohol more slowly and gradually. Going sober is a hard choice, but one that can improve your life for the better, especially if you are serious about starting over. Here are some steps to use as you detox and make the change in your own life.

Alcohol Detoxification

Remove All of the Alcoholic Beverages from Your Home:
Begin your detoxification by removing all of the alcoholic beverages from your home and other locations that you visit or frequent. Many alcoholics hide liquor in secret spots to ensure they have enough during a crisis. However, the only way to detoxify is by avoiding any alcohol, including the varieties that are often in cold medications or foods. You might need your parent’s, roommates, or spouse’s help ridding your living space of alcohol and all house members should be on board with this new program.

Stop Communicating with Your Drinking Buddies:
After an alcohol detoxification, you cannot associate with your drinking buddies. This may seem harsh, but you can no longer be around anyone who drinks beer, wine, or other alcoholic beverages. You may also need to stop communicating with relatives who drink to avoid a relapse. It can be a difficult change to make, but one that is necessary for your future health. As you get better and learn to control your addiction, being around other drinkers might be possible. You just have to get to know yourself and your limits first.

Arrange to Take At Least One Week Off from Work or School:
An alcohol detoxification can last up to a week, so you need to request time off from work or school in order to devote the time to the withdrawal process. The symptoms of withdrawal vary for each individual, but you may have intense nausea that leads to vomiting or dizziness. In addition, you are likely to perspire heavily or experience constant shaking. Many other symptoms can exhibit, and knowing what to expect during the process can help. Talk to a doctor or professional about what symptoms you might be able to expect and what is out of the norm.

Plan How to Use Your Time During an Alcohol Detoxification:
You do not want to become bored during a detoxification process, so create a plan to keep your mind and body busy during this phase. If you are able to sleep at least eight hours a night, then you will think clearly the next morning, but many individuals are unable to relax while detoxifying. You can keep yourself busy with enjoyable activities that are soothing such as listening to your favorite music or watching movies.

Contact an Addiction Treatment Center:
After an alcohol detoxification, you need to visit an addiction treatment center frequently where you can talk to counselors and attend 12-step meetings. Overcoming an addiction to alcohol requires a lifetime of dedication to avoid a dangerous relapse back to drinking. Having a support group available is the best possible defense. See if you can meet with others at least once a week or more to share experiences and find more support in more places.

Change Your Daily Routines and Lifestyle:
An important part of detoxification is changing your daily routines and lifestyle. In addition to giving up old friends, you may need to move to a new location or stay away from favorite places such as restaurants or taverns. It’s ultimately up to you how you plan to tackle your addiction and recovery.
