Many people often say they are depressed when they are feeling unhappy at a particular time or when they are simply fed up with their day to day activities. Although most of us use that word to describe our current state of mind, depression is actually a condition, which is very persistent and doesn’t go away for weeks or even months. It is wrong to believe that depression is not an illness but rather a moment of weakness. It is a real illness and has to be treated as such and not ignored. If diagnosed properly, it is cured and patients can fully recover.

Anxiety and Depression

When you are diagnosed with this illness, the doctor would probably prescribe you some sort of antidepressants. Remember not to buy any antidepressants without prescription as that could endanger your health. Antidepressants aim at bettering the feeling of anxiety and fear a patient might experience. However, they take time to work and some people might not be able to avail of them for example pregnant women. That is why it is good to know some natural ways through which you can win the fight with depression without the use of antidepressants.

Depression usually translates into a life without structure, aims and ambitions. Every day is the same and you have no desire to be out, to socialize or to enjoy life. You will feel like you are no good for anything and can’t accomplish even the simplest task.

Set daily achievable tasks that you can succeed at i.e. washing the dishes, putting a washing load on, vacuuming, etc. As soon as you feel much better, you can expand your daily list with more goals that may bring a little bit of a challenge. Include exercise in your daily activities to boost the endorphin. Regular walks 3-4 times per week can really benefit your condition. With regular exercise comes healthy eating. Change your eating habits and include fatty acids like omega-3 (tuna and salmon) and folic acid (avocado and spinach).

Depression can cause irregular sleep patterns, which can worsen your condition even further. In order to sleep better, try to avoid napping during the day and don’t watch TV before you go to bed. Make sure that you go to bed at the same time every evening and you get up at the same time every morning.

Try and have as much fun as possible in order to give your mind time to focus on the positive things in life. Try and think of all those activities that you like doing and places you like visiting. Call the friends you cherish the most and go out for a nice movie. Depressed people tend to hide themselves from the surrounding world and rarely allow friends to help them. Although your doctor would probably prescribe good and efficient antidepressants, you also have to change some things in your life in order to get the best results.

I find that doing activities that I love really help. It let’s you stop and slow down for a while and remember why you used to be so happy
