7 Essentials for the Home Gym

Are you embarrassed or self-conscious when working out in front of others? Or maybe you’re just tired of signing up for classes that you never take. Whatever your reasons for building a home gym, here are seven essentials for doing it right.

Gym Workout

1. Dumbbells

Dumbbells can be used in everything from lifting to resistance training, making them a useful and highly versatile investment. Buy several different sizes and weights so your workout routine can evolve as you grow stronger.

2. Exercise Ball

Not only do exercise balls work on multiple muscle groups, but they’ll also give you multiple benefits when you use them. If you’re looking for an easy way to improve your strength, balance, coordination, focus and endurance, exercise balls are the way to go.

3. Treadmill

When looking at treadmills, it’s important to consider your long-term goals in addition to your immediate needs. Is it a good investment? Will its technology be obscure in five years? Will it complement a variety of workout routines? Don’t spend a lot of money on something rigid and inflexible.

4. Pull-Up Bar

Pull-up bars are extremely affordable when compared to high-tech equipment. They’ll also never go out of style; they’re classics for a reason. Whether you’re training for a sports competition or just working on your triceps, you can always use a pull-up bar.

5. Bicycles

Bicycles have gotten a bad reputation over the years because of the way people abuse them and damage their knees. If you cycle responsibly, however, you can get a full-body workout without even leaving your seat. Talk to a personal trainer for more information.

6. Boxes

Did you know that a simple box can boost your cardio routine by as much as 50 percent? This is because you work out several different muscle groups by stepping up and down an incline; it’s the same reason some treadmills offer a tilting feature. Get a sturdy box and see what it can do for you.

7. Stereo

Last but certainly not least, it’s important to have a good stereo in your workout space. Studies have shown that fast music has an actual, tangible effect on the brain, boosting your energy levels and letting you work out both harder and longer.

These are just seven must-haves for anyone building a home gym. Check out Unique Fitness Concepts and other similar companies for more information and purchase options.

I have a home gym (admittedly without all the equipment that you have suggested above). It is great to be able to use it whenever you want and not have to go out to the gym.
